The Altarpiece
"The Altarpiece" is conceived as a work of quiet devotion within a society that only appears to have lost its spiritual ground. Created through the lens of my phone, the piece reimagines the medieval polyptych in the context of contemporary Venice, where the passing crowd becomes a new object of contemplation. Tourists take the place of saints, their gestures and movements composing a secular ritual of seeing. What was once devotion is now observation; what was once prayer becomes spectacle. Guided by a poetic voice in Italian and French by the poet François Labitrie, and by a meditative soundscape by the musician Valerio Pascucci, the work reflects on masks, appearance, and presence. It invites a slower gaze, one that lingers beyond the surface, where the everyday crowd, long regarded as mere consumers, is here granted dignity, both in its own right and as a mirror of our own necessary transformative condition.
